News Use Across Social Media Platforms in 2020
About half of U.S. adults say they get news from social media “often” or “sometimes,” and this use is spread out across a number of different sites. Facebook stands out as a regular source of news for about a third of Americans.
✒ Key takeaways:
- More than a third of Americans get news from Facebook regularly.
- Some social media platforms are more “newsy” — Twitter is used by 25% of American adults but over half of its users get news on the site regularly; YouTube, on the other hand, is widely used yet a smaller portion of its users turn to the site for news.
- Among the platforms surveyed, only Instagram has white adults making up less than half of its regular news user base (about 40% only). Black and Hispanic adults together contributed to around 50%.
